BCAAs: Quick and Dirty
There are over 20 amino acids required to sustain life in the human body. Of these there 8 "essential" amino acids, meaning they cannot be produced by the body and must be injested through diet or supplement. Of these essential a.a.s, there are 3 Branch Chain Amino Acids (BCAAs): L-Leucine, L-Isoleucine, and L-Valine.
These 3 BCAAs may all be found in Dairy, Meats, nuts, and seeds. These BCAAs are anti-catabolic, which means they stop the breakdown of muscle tissue during exercise. Stress and Exercise put the body into a catabolic state, depleting Glycogen (muscle energy), and releasing L-Alanine which halts protein synthesis. Introducing BCAAs before the workout may interfere with the Alanine signal by causing increased Insulin production in the pancreas. This production causes a signal cascade which results in the increased and continued production of proteins (building muscle!) BCAAs also aide in Glycogen and Nitrogen retention. (Nitrogen also helps to avoid catabolic muscle loss.)
Supplementation of BCAAs with Carbohydrates following a resistance exercise may increase insulin output by 221%, versus 66% without Leucine.
Valine, named after the plant Valerian, has a daily recommended dosage of 15mg. Leucine, from the Greek "Leukos" (white) has a daily recommended dosage of 16mg per kg body mass. Isoleucine has a daily recommended dosage of 10-12mg per kg. A preworkout dose of 5g should be split as 1g Isoleucine, and 2g Valine and Leucine. A Post-workout dose of 5g should be split the same way, and may be replaced by 40g of Whey Protein (as in a Shake.) In an unofficial poll done on EliteFitness.com asking "Have you seem Direct Muscle Gains from BCAAs?" 44% of 197 people said "Yes! ABSOLUTELY!" 44% said "I wasn't sure." 11% said "No! It's worthless!"
Symptoms of BCAA deficiency mimic symptoms of hypoglycemia. The use of BCAAs may reverse some cases of hepatic encephalopathy, a form of liver disease in alcoholics. Those with history of liver or kidney disease should never begin amino acid therapy without consulting a physician! An acute overdose of Valine may cause the sensation of skin crawling, or hallucinations.
