11/8 Volunteer: Twin Palms Center for the Disabled

There are days when you wake up early, knowing the day will be filled with scrubbing floors and washing windows, and you actually love it.

This morning I volunteered with the group Students Advocating for Volunteer Involvement (SAVI) at the Twin Palms Center for the Disabled. There was a nice whiteboard list of things the Center needed help with, and a busload of students to do it! I started out scrubbing baseboards, then dusted and washed windows, then pulled Balsam Apple out of a hedge. Seriously, I had one contiguous piece of Balsam Apple that took up a whole black trash bag when balled up. Oh my goodness. It was hard work, I'm a little sore already, but it was so great to see so many people come together to help out the Center!

The Center happened to be empty, but the staff told us we were more than welcome back anytime. In fact, we were invited to go bowling with some of the clients next week! It sounds like fun, and some of us are seeing if we can make it!

About the Center:

Twin Palms Center provides a unique setting for individuals diagnosed with developmental delays, by offering a rich social and academic learning environment.

The Twin Palms experience gives these adults the opportunity to become active participants at home and in their communities.

The MISSION of Twin Palms Center is to improve the quality of life for individuals diagnosed with developmental challenges. We also dedicate this program to educating our community on the talents and abilities that these individuals possess. Our GOAL is to encourage individual growth, development, and socialization in a supportive environment. We will accomplish this objective while treating our clients with the dignity and respect that they seek and deserve.

Throughout its forty year history, Twin Palms Center has continued to expand its facilities and programs to better serve its clients and the community. Clients are ambulatory and are able to care for their own personal needs.
