Old Glory Half Mast for Houston... IMPROPER
Recently, my uncle Bill voiced his displeasure at the impropriety of an alleged order for the Flag of the United States of America to be flown half-mast for the funeral of recently dead singer Whitney Houston. Being a bit of a flag-etiquette buff I had to weigh in. In short, the Gov of the state where she's a resident is authorized to order it lowered in HIS jurisdiction. I disagree that is should be. This isn't to dishonor her memory, but because I think lowering it for her pales the honor of those it is authorized to be lowered for.
Below you'll find the Wiki on USA Flag Etiquette, and my personal rant.

"There's a list of personas the flag is required to be lowered for as per Flag Etiquette Which IS LAW in the USA. The list may be found a the above Wiki, but in short:
-current or former president,
-current vice president, chief justice, or speaker of the House of Representatives.
-Associate Justice of the Supreme Court, a secretary of an executive or military department, a former vice president, or the governor of a state, territory, or possession.
-Member of Congress.
-On Memorial Day until noon.
And recently;
-firefighters, massacre dates (including the Columbia disaster), a MAJOR civil rights activist (Rosa Parks), Frank Buckles (for dying as the last survivor of WWI), and Pope John Paul II (I disagree with this one).
Otherwise, half-masting the flag may be done on the whim of Governors of the several U.S. states or territories and are "authorized by federal law to order all U.S. and state flags in **their jurisdiction** flown at half-staff as a mark of respect for a state official or resident who has died."
If the Governor of the state where she was a resident has authorized the flag to be lowered for her funeral, fine. (More on that below.) I think it demeans the flag a little bit to have it flown for a celebrity who had a gift but snorted it away, but my opinions are not everyone. When I see the flag half mast I see the SACRIFICES people made for THIS COUNTRY as a government body, as a PEOPLE. I see the men and women who fought, died, FIGHT, DIE, for our LIBERTY. I DO NOT SEE GLITTER ON A STAGE, I SEE BLOOD IN THE SAND.
But if that Governor feels her life is such a tragedy that he wants to Half-Mast the colors, flown over the cold bodies of people who gave their LIFE for the commonest of hungry child, he has that power. I, for one, see no sacrifice in wearing a gold bikini on stage, making millions, and self-destructing."

According to Houston's Wiki, she died a resident of California. Governor Christie is the governor of New Jersey. He is simply NOT AUTHORIZED to order the flag lowered for her death, even though she was BORN there. She was NO LONGER A RESIDENT. Go on Public; commence splitting hairs.

Don't be so hard on Whitney Houston, she's been sober for almost two weeks now.
